BLACK AND WHITE PORTRAIT PAINTINGS BY CHARLES BIERK
Toronto-based painter Charles Bierk (facebook / twitter) whose black and white portraits (oil on canvas) verge on photo-realism while they explore the process of their own making. Charles begins with a photograph of a face which then becomes source material for a monolithic, monochromatic portrait. Working on a large scale and using a specific square-by-square method, Charles’ new work is as much about the subject of faces as it is the practice of painting.
LIGHT BULB
New York, Brooklyn-based photographer William Castellana (behance)- “For my black-and-white still life work I alternate between different types of lights and set-ups since the realization of the idea is contingent upon choosing a certain type of light and technique. For example, in the Light Bulb series I employ a technique known as “painting with light.” In the image titled “Homage to Thomas Edison,” I handheld one incandescent light bulb, housed in its reflector and moved it around during a long exposure.”
IMPOSITIONS BY GREGORY SCOTT
Chicago-based painter & photographer Gregory Scott - “Gregory has always blurred the lines between painting and photography, incorporating paintings he did of himself, or parts of his body, back into his photographs. The resulting images were both humorous and odd, challenging the viewers perception of photographic truth. Then, at the age of 49, Scott decided to go back to school to extend his knowledge of video and art history. Having successfully merged his love of painting and photographs, his interest turned to video and its ability to move and manipulate still images.”

FRED FRASER
Canada, Vancouver-based photographer Fred Fraser - “This is where I am supposed to tell you about how I was given a camera when I was 2 months old and took a ton of artistic photos of everyone’s feet, then later, in high school, took Pulitzer winning photos of the cheerleaders, attending some University with the intention of getting a PhD in molecular biology but couldn’t deny my artistic inclinations so I went on to get my BFA at some important art school and parleyed that all into award winning photos shot for Nike, Microsoft, Apple and Coca Cola once I turned pro at 19 years of age.”
OMO VALLEY TRIBES IN SOUTH-WESTERN ETHIOPIA
Chile, San Pedro de Atacama-based freelance photographer Ralph Bennett Crignola - “The Lower Omo River in south west Ethiopia is home to eight different tribes whose population is about 200,000. They have lived there for centuries. However, the future of these tribes lies in the balance. A massive hydro-electric dam, Gibe III, is under construction on the Omo and when completed it will destroy a fragile environment and the livelihoods of the tribes, which are closely linked to the river and its annual flood.”
