BLACK AND WHITE PORTRAIT PAINTINGS BY CHARLES BIERK

Toronto-based painter Charles Bierk (facebook / twitter) whose black and white portraits (oil on canvas) verge on photo-realism while they explore the process of their own making. Charles begins with a photograph of a face which then becomes source material for a monolithic, monochromatic portrait. Working on a large scale and using a specific square-by-square method, Charles’ new work is as much about the subject of faces as it is the practice of painting.

HANGARBICOCCA BY THOMAS SARACENO

Argentinian artist Tomas Saraceno (born 1973) - installation view at HangarBicocca, Milan. (previously)

For On Space Time Foam, his new installation at the HangarBicocca, Saraceno conceived a large transparent membrane (which he amusingly calls la lasagna) that visitors can get into. Folded in three layers, it is suspended at 25-metres above the ground, providing a radical bodily experience. (An interview from Milan by Filipa Ramos)

JAVASCAPES - abstractions of the flow and dispersion of cream into coffee

PA, Wrightsville-based photographer Daniel G. Walczyk - "In a simple, everyday and even mundane act, life erupts from the firmament; the subatomic and microscopic beginnings of the universe and the history of the world are revealed in the abstractions of the flow and dispersion of cream into coffee. "Javascapes" began life from a serendipitous observation by artist/photographer d. g. walczyk as he poured cream into his pint glass of iced coffee in the summer of 2011. What he saw as the cream was poured and before stirring to thoroughly blend was a variable speed dispersion of the heavier liquid in the darkness of the caffeinated unknown; the formation of a new world in the cold "molten" admixture of South Pacific Blend and 1/2 & 1/2."

FLOWER SCULPTURES PARADE IN ZUNDERT, NETHERLANDS

Bloemencorso, the annual parade of flowers in Zundert. Despite the relatively small nature of Zundert (a small town with a population of about 20,000) the variety of and ingenuity of these sculptures seems to know no bounds. [via thisiscolossal]

H.R. GIGER MUSEUM BAR

in Château St. Germain, Gruyères, Switzerland

H.R.Giger - Hans Rudolf “Ruedi” Giger is a Swiss surrealist painter, sculptor, and set designer.

"The interior of the otherworldly environment that is the H.R. Giger Museum Bar is a cavernous, skeletal structure covered by double arches of vertebrae that crisscross the vaulted ceiling of an ancient castle. The sensation of being in this extraordinary setting recalls the tale of Jonah and the whale, lending the feel of being literally in the belly of a fossilized, prehistoric beast, or that you have been transported into the remains of a mutated future civilization." -  Text excerpt from Secret Magazine No. 23, by Javier De Pison

BEAUTIFUL POLAROID SHOTS BY MARITZA DE LA VEGA

Maritza de la Vega - "I was born in Cuba, raised on the mean streets of NYC and currently reside in a small hamlet in Rockland County, NY with my family. I have the good fortune of working at a small law firm just two miles from home. I use an SX-70 Alpha, and an SLR 680 SE for integral film and a 440 for pack film.

I like that it is instant, of course, but also that it’s tangible. It’s great to hold an image in my hand and admire it without the aid of a brightly lit screen!”

HUT “Hermitage” by Ethan Hayes-Chute

Artist Ethan Hayes-Chute lives and works in Freeport, Maine & Berlin, Germany. Through paintings, sculptures, large-scale installations and artist’s books, he explores the ideas of self-sufficiency, self-preservation and self-exclusion as models for living. Hayes-Chute’s hut is an accumulation of stuff, the ephemera of the every day. Its materials are found, stitched together, hand-assembled – chair, desk, table, shaving mirror, and coffee mug furnish the cabin’s primary function to house and sustain.
