STREET ART BY EL MAC
Artist Miles “MAC” MacGregor - Born in Los Angeles in 1980 to an engineer and an artist, Mac has been creating and studying art independently since childhood. He was inspired at a young age by classic European painters such as Caravaggio, and Vermeer and Art Nouveau symbolists such as Klimt and Mucha. This was mixed with the more contemporary influences of graffiti and photorealism, as well as as the Chicano & Mexican culture he grew up around.
CANTAMAÑANAS IX URBAN ART FESTIVAL
Graffiti - Street Art by Caktus & Maria
Huarte, Spain - “San Esteban” Park | 3-10 September 2012
ORIGAMI MASTER
Berlin, Germany-based Artist RYLSEE - Here’s a mural I did for ArtBase2012 in Berlin. It was supposed to take place in TeufelsBerg, an old abandoned observatory in the west of the city, but a week before the opening of the festival, (even though a lot of artists had already painted wicked murals there) the authorities came and cancelled the festival for some obscure reasons.
This place was a painter’s paradise, indeed. There are about ten different buildings and some bunkers, and believe it or not, when we showed up the first day, every single wall was blank… That’s why I was able to paint a whole side of a house on my own.
COLOURFUL FACES
Germany, Berlin-based Artist Johannes Mundinger (facebook) - “Slowly I got the impression that every medium was appropriate and the most profane materials were just the right thing. They were best paired with banal themes, like in the example of Nose Picking Pictures. Was it about the avoidance of collaboration with a sublime artistic concept with a bloated theoretical superstructure? Was it simply the joy in creating in the moment without having to consider the reception in the world afterwards? Is the artist picking my nose with his index finger, in order to consume the last traces of the grey matter in my head for dessert with delight?” - Oliver Breitenstein, director Berliner Kunstverein
“Hidden in forgotten places across the City, Johannes Mundinger‘s artworks are found mainly by accident. Colourful faces, fantastic figures and wall-paintings melted totally into decaying facades, create anxiety in dark urban corners. Corresponding to Graffiti, the style of the Artist is in a constant dialogue with this form of the street art. The lyrical and painterly finesse of Mundinger‘s works remains in contradition to the roughness and inexactitude of urban art. They are unique compositions. - Petra Wessbecher, Cultural scientist
WOMEN ARE HEROES | BRAZIL
Inside Out Project - Street artist JR
Moro de Providencia is a place of which the name has become synonymous for violence in Rio de Janeiro. However the reason this favela (shantytown) located in the center of Rio appeared on television screens in August 2008 wasn’t the regular scenes of clashes between drug dealers and the police but to present the art exhibition Women. In order to pay tribute to those who play an essential role in society but who are the primary victims of war , crime, rape and political or religious fanaticism, JR pasted huge photos of the faces and eyes of local women all over the outside of the favela, suddenly giving a female gaze to both the hill and the favela.
THE WRINKLES OF THE CITY - LA HAVANA
Inside Out Project - Street artist JR
In May 2012, JR collaborates with Cuban-American artist José Parlá on the latest iteration of The Wrinkles of the City: a huge mural installation in Havana, undertaken for the Havana Biennale, for which JR and Parlá photographed and recorded 25 senior citizens who had lived through the Cuban revolution, creating portraits which Parlá, who is of Cuban descent, interlaced with palimpsestic calligraphic writings and paintings.
“JR began his career as a teenage graffiti artist who was by his own admission not interested in changing the world, but in making his mark on public space and society. His graffiti often targeted precarious places like rooftops and subway trains, and he deeply enjoyed the adventure of going to and painting in these spaces. After finding a camera in the Paris Metro, JR and his friends began to document the act of his graffiti painting. At 17, he began applying photocopies of these photographs to outdoor walls.”
COLOR REVOLUTION
In collaboration with Amnesty International and “Color Revolution”, A.Signl from the Captain Borderline crew recently completed this mural in Cologne, Germany to point out the human rights violations in China.
The interesting mural is reminiscent of a photo that was taken during the massacre at the Tiananmen Square in 1989. If you are in the neighbourhood, this new mural can be seen on Vogelsanger Str. 283 in Cologne.

Pay phones may not be as prevalent as they used to be, but who’s to say that they aren’t staples of our environments?
